Handmade Ornament Campaign Criteria

Trimming The Tree

Wyoming artists-all ages & skills- are invited to create ornaments that depict our theme "Wyoming- Forever West".

We invite participation from everyone - school classes, scout troops, 4-H Clubs, art councils, civic organizations and all other interested youth and adult groups. Members of your group will have a unique opportunity to join a long standing national tradition and create ornaments for this special Wyoming project!

What?

Ornaments will reflect the theme, "Wyoming- Forever West". Two types of ornaments are needed:

  • 5000 ornaments for the large, outdoor tree and
  • 1000 ornaments for the smaller, indoor "companion" trees.

Where & When?

The Bridger-Teton National Forest will collect all ornaments prior to shipping them to D.C. The deadline is October 22, 2010! Ship ornaments to: Pam Bode, Bridger-Teton National Forest, 340 North Cache St PO Box 1888 Jackson, WY 83001

If it's possible, check in with our Ornament Coordinators (see contact information at the bottom of this page) to confirm what type of ornaments are most needed before you start your project.

Specific Ornament Criteria for Outdoor 60+ Ft. Tree

To help ensure your ornaments can be used on the 2010 Capitol Christmas Tree consider the following ...

  • 9-12" in size, and less than 1/2 pound in weight.
  • Durable & weatherproof for use outdoors in of wet & wintry conditions.
  • Ready for hanging, with a 12-15 inch loop of 20 gauge (coat-hanger weight) wire attached to top corners.
  • Decorate with colorful materials that, if possible, are reflective. To minimize environmental impacts, ornament makers are encouraged to use recycled construction materials.
  • Decorate on both sides with a large, relatively simple design that can be seen from a distance of 25-70 ft.

Specific Ornament Criteria for Small, Indoor Trees

In addition to providing the 60+ tall tree for the Capitol, we will also take 70+ smaller trees to decorate agency and congressional offices throughout D.C. We'd like to take a few Wyoming-made ornaments to each of these locations as well.

Ornaments made for the indoor trees should follow these design criteria:

  • 3-7 inches in height.
  • These ornaments will be viewed close up so quality and detail are important. Use of recycled construction materials is encouraged, to minimize the environmental impacts and encourage creative recycling.

More Information? Just call email or call Pam Bode, 307-739-5513. We'll welcome your involvement. We'll post pictures of Wyomingites making ornaments, and the resulting individual ornaments, on the Photo Gallery page. Please take a few pictures of your group and your ornaments and provide those to us in a digital format - either via email or on a CD shipped with your ornaments.

Thanks! We can't wait to see the results of your creative efforts!
